GATE EXAM PATTERN

GATE exam is a computer-based online test that is conducted for 3 hours. The exam consists of a total of 65 questions including both objective and numerical answer type (NAT) questions. The overall score is for 100 and is divided into 3 sections – namely General Aptitude, Engineering Mathematics, and Subject-Specific Questions.

Candidates who’re appearing for GATE are expected to answer the general aptitude section. There is no negative marking for numerical answer type section; no marks will be deducted for unanswered questions. All major disciplines in GATE exam include 3 sections and this does not include AR, CY, GG, EY, XL, PH, and MA.

The paper code for Electrical Engineering is EE and given below is the marks distribution for each section.

1. General Aptitude – 15% of the total marks

2. Engineering Mathematics – 15% of the total marks

3. Subject Questions (Electrical Engineering) – 70% of the total marks

TYPES OF QUESTIONS

As mentioned above, the first 2 sections in GATE consists of both multiple choices as well as numerical answer type questions. The multiple-choice questions come with 4 options out of which only one is right. In the case of numerical type questions, candidates must enter the numerical value as the answer.

Candidates must use the mouse and virtual keyboard to answer the questions since GATE is a computer-based exam. Here is the list of different types of questions that a candidate must answer:

Recall – Questions in this section are generally based on well-known facts and principles, derived formulae, and proven laws of Electrical Engineering discipline. Candidates answer these questions either by recollecting the answer from his/her memory or from the given single-line computation.

Comprehension – This section consists of questions that test the candidate’s understanding of the electrical engineering discipline. Here, the candidates are expected to derive simple conclusions from fundamental principles and ideas to answer the questions.

Application – Questions in this section tests the application skills of the candidates. They must apply their subject knowledge either through logical reasoning or by computation.

Analysis and Synthesis – This section consists of questions that are in a linked format, meaning the answer to the 1st question in the pair is necessary to answer the next successor question in the sequence.

Common Data Questions – In this section, candidates can expect multiple questions that are linked to a comprehension passage or a common data problem. A maximum of two or three questions is formed based on the given input data. Questions in this section are independent of each other and answers to these questions can be derived separately. Each question in this section carries 2 marks.

Linked Answer Questions – Questions in this section are of a problem-solving type. Candidates can find a problem statement based on which they have to answer 2 questions. In this section, the questions are interlinked to each other, meaning the 2nd question depends on the solution derived from the 1st question. Each question in this section is allocated with 2 marks.
